Independence Day

Poem Commentary

I just wanted to write something for this Independence day and about how my heart has been touched by the people in Iran who are fighting and dying for freedom.

Independence Day

Today on our Independence Day, the Fourth of July,
I feel so proud to be an American, it's hard not to cry.
Have you ever thought about what you'd give to be free,
if you weren't so blessed to live in this great land?
Would you give your life, your fortune,
or at least be willing to take a stand?
So many in this world have no idea
what it's like to be free.
People are dying in the streets of Iraq
just for a chance to live like you and me
In America we take so much for granted,
not thinking of others here on this earth.
We never stop to give thanks and realize
just how much our freedom's worth.

For just a moment, I'd like to pause and ask God
to forgive us for our selfish hearts.
I want to pledge to you, Lord, this is the day
that within me a new determination starts.
With Your help I'll remember always to be grateful
for our blessings and our liberty.
For it's only by your grace and longsuffering
that we're so privileged to still be free.
I don't know what I can do to help those who are
so bravely sacrificing for what we have,
or how to show my gratitude for being so blessed.
all I know to do is pray and try to make a difference,
Then leave to You the rest.

Those who fight and die for freedom across the globe
are not just numbers or some distant others.
They are who we once were 200 years ago;
For this cause, they are our sisters and brothers.
So on this Independence Day, dear God,
please be with those on a distant shore.
But be with America too, Lord.
For we need your touch as never before.

I made a mistake in the poem but I wasn't able to go back and correct it. I meant to say, "People are dying the streets of Iran" not Iraq. Sorry.

Poetry is what gets lost in translation.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
