What's It Like To Be Me

As I look in the mirror as the hours pass away
You stand right behind me, asking the same question each day
"What is it like to have things my way?"
I turn around and stare your way
And answer the question you ask each day
"You dont know whats's it like to be me
As short as grass or as tall as a tree
Cant decide where I wan't to be
Or what's it like to be free to me
Do you know what's it like to be me?"
"You stare in the mirror each passing hour
Wondering how it feels to be sour
Gluing yourself to a falling tower
Don't you have a special power?
So no I don't know what's it like to be you
Describing how it felt to be blue,
How it felt as you flew
Decribing life as you grew
I really don't know what's it like to be you"
So as I look in the mirror as the hours pass away
You grab me trying to pull me away as you say
"When you're with me you can have things your way"
I turn around and stare your way and say
"I'm glad I don't have to answer that question each day"

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
