    Poem Commentary

I wrote this several years ago for Wilford Brimley. I tried in vain for a long time to find a way to get it to him but never could. I eventually put it to music and just recently came across it in some old files.

    Wilford

It seems for years that I've tried to show a cheery side
    To those aound me
Maybe it'smy age but I've become a bit unsatisfied
    Where life has found me
I tend to let myself fall under a spell
    Mesmerized by glamorous movie stars
Living to be seen on the Hollywood scene
I follow their careers in magazines with a wishful heart !!!!!

    But

Wilford I want to be like you
    Sell the world on oatmeal
    A dream come true
Wilford I want to be like you
    Out making movies
    Being on TV
Wilford I want to be like you

You started acting at my age but I'm not sure if it's TV or stage
    You were doing it
That work would be like play and I would take it any day
If they'd let me do it
I really want to know what it takes to go
Be one of those famous movie stars
Waiting to be seen on the movie screen
My pictures in People magazine I'd play the part!!!!!

    So

Wilford I want to be like you
    Sell the world on oatmeal
    A dream come true
Wilford I want to be like you
    Out making movies
    Being on the TV
Wilford I want to be like you

       I could ride a horse
       Talk about diabetes
       Grow a 'stache of course
Yor're the hero that i needed

Wilford I want to be like you

Celebrity worship is very commonplace. I don't get it. But this much I do understand. When you don't worship God you will worship something. Thus the idols.

Poetry is what gets lost in translation.

    Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
