Without Your Words

Without Your Words

Without your words, existence seems peculiarly different

As if suddenly a dividing door exists between two universes that once were one

Musical notes echo in the background, as I wonder where your feet travel

The breeze cools my skin as I walk through the sand imagining the world you now inhabit in your dreams

Without your words, I can only pretend to know your thoughts

As I picture your hands moving in perfect synchrony in a white canvas

I see your body suspended by the bench you use to sit your doubts upon

And the silence of the room is invaded by the rhythm of a word, the color of a paint stroke, the moonlight through the window

Without your words, it is easier to cope with your absence

As if you are a sailor destined to eternally dwell in uncharted waters

Without goodbyes, or plans to return to any of the ports you’ve already discovered

The only trace of your existence left behind by letters you once wrote in the name of love, the memories of our once upon a time

Without your words, I come to embrace my being which is absolute

As unrestrained and limitless as a newborn child, unscripted and virgin

There is only this body and the sky above it, no sense of direction, time or space

And as the days pass, I try to recall all the details of your face, the tone of your voice before it becomes too faint

Without your words, I still sense your eternal presence within

As your unending light illuminates a sea I often swim in

Time seems to stand still as if waiting, anticipating your uncertain return

And reasoning is no longer necessary to endure the journey to the days I now greet,

A journey to the days without your words…

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.

Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) Greek philosopher.
