A Picture Painted On My Heart

Though the time we spent together
Was so short and brief in days
    We have shared a lifetime
You touched my heart in many ways.

We gave of our true selves.
We shared what no one ever sees.
    You have painted a picture
On my heart that never leaves.

    Love has touched our lives
But a moment of the whole
    And I am changed forever
    Because I felt your soul.

    When life becomes too much
I'll turn the pages in my mind
And i will feel you hold me
Kissing the tears that I have cried.

We can't know what life will bring
But it can never steal away
    The melding of our souls
Or keep the memories at bay.

Comparing this with a former post yields a powerful picture of a life transforming relationship that happened to be more ephemoral than hoped. Emotional connectedness with others in life is a gift, even though the connections often get lost too soon.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
