A Sympathetic Man?

A Sympathetic Man?

Her tears slip quietly
Down her face
As he holds her close
And whispers softly.
“I love you”
He tells her
And kisses away the tears
“Don’t cry, I’m here.”
She sighs as the tears
Fade slowly away
He pulls her closer
“I’ll never leave you”
She hears him say

She wants to believe him
But somehow she can’t
She’s been hurt too many times
Cried too much
It feels too familiar
Others have claimed
The same thing he
Is claiming now
But they’re all gone
Won’t he do the same?

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
