    Basset Hound Eyes

    Beautiful blue
    Light like the sky
    There’s nothing like
    His basset hound eyes

    He looks so tired
    His blue eyes droop
    But still they are
    Bold and true

    They tell a story
    One he can’t alter
    The truth’s revealed
    They never falter

    He says one thing
    But his eyes never lie
    I just can’t get over
    Those basset hound eyes

    His camouflage says
    That he is a hunter
    While the mud just screams
    “Hey! I’m country!”

    But his beautiful eyes
    Bare everything
    At least to me
Of course this goes both ways

He reads me like a book
The same way I do him
    But we can’t begin
    To get close to understand

    His eyes are the truth
But the rest is a mystery
    Three little words
    Will start that journey

    But for now I sit
    Wearing a smile
    For amazing days
To be seen with his eyes.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
