Enough

Enough

Silence begets people who bite the dust.
Could I reveal without saying too much?
I was on a high wall, enjoying the view,
whisteling, singing, I thought you were too.
You took a sledgehammer, a strong one at that
and raged at the bricks until I lay flat.
This is not the first time I've been so stunned.
The worst part about it is that you think you've won.
I'm recuperating, still taking my time to rise.
On my left knee, then right, stifling my cries.
The sun is setting in the west, and I'm sitting on my feet.
All the effort, all I've gained, lies in rubble around me.
I should be angry, but I'm not, neither am I surprised.
This wouldn't be the first time that I've supped on your lies.
Well I'll be damned because your conviction is enough.
I will hear no more from you, I will merrily kick rocks.
I'd like to see you happy, but it pains me to say this,
but you keep seeking happiness in a warzone you've created.

"Well I'll be damned because your conviction is enough" —bravo!

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) American poet.
