ATTN POETS!!! ANSWER THIS IF YOU MAY...

I'm never in my most free state until I posses the power of a pen
and an unheard heart.
Freedom of the world.
I can say whatever I want, however I want.
I can be bold.
I can be the critic of society that I have every right to be.
Strength is not in numbers or muscle.
It's in knowledge.
And my knowledge can only be understood through my words,
obviously, because, if I never said a word, people would deem me clueless, inexperienced.
Because words, if carefully arranged, can have a powerful impact.
Words have saved
Words have killed.
Torn down.
Lifted up.
Consoled.
Destroyed.
But you already know this...

Now that you understand a taste of what this means to me, I have a simple question for you. I do not know many poets. True poets. In fact, I've never known a true poet. But I'm sure there are many of you here, reading this, at least, I hope. Now for my question: Why do you write? Or, what does poetry mean for you?

I would like to hear from the true writers.

I write to release the passion inside me. my heartaches. my happiness. my ups and downs. and I write to express my feelings about others. places, people, things. much like an actor, I write because it lets me explore a new role. If all the worlds a stage, then let poetry be my script!

i write because i feel insane most of the time. writing and being around the words and expressions of other poets help me to feel so much less alone. i can be myself without "the normals" looking at me funny or questioning my actions. i have strength, love and hope, i do. however, expressing it here, in this forum anonymously empowers me, somehow. i am a real person and i have a few things to say without having to doll up. hope that answers your questions.

I almost thought I was the only one. If I never wrote, I think I would've lost my head a long time ago. Thanks for that.

I write because like you said im an introvert and this gives me the freedom to say whatever i please. And I also write because I believe as writers we are put on this earth to give a second minimallyto completely unbias opinion of situations. I write as an escape sometimes, as a hobby other, but mainly as a strive to better the world though what i hope people get out of my storys. This is my poem all about what it means to me to be a poet if you'd like to check it out http://www.originalpoetry.com/the-point-of-a-poet

Hmmm- interesting questions, which I would like to answer though I have no idea whether I qualify as a "true poet" or a "true writer." I only know that I have a burning need to write things. But I go through times of dry spells where I don't write at all. I started writing, actually, to write one poem in particular, but I wrote many before I got it down on paper. Others I write for special people in my life. Sometimes they reflect experiences I've had, or about life as it should be, rather than the reality of it. My poetry professor in college proclaimed on the first day of class, that poetry never changed anything. Maybe so, in the grand scheme of things, but I believe that when I write something it always changes me. It lets out the bad and also the good feelings within me. Sometimes, after I write I see things differently or more clearly. And sometimes comments made on my work will point something out to me that I didn't see while writing. I guess I write for myself, as a hobby. I need to do it, and I like it. It isn't all that important to me whether I win contests or am ever published. But I am kind of a perfectionist. When I make a typo, or a grammatical error that I don't catch, I am mortified. Everything I do is a rough draft for the better write. I pick at it like a dog at a bone, all the while knowing that it'll never be perfect, because I'm not. Alas! Than you, Pocohantas, for posing these questions. I enjoyed answering them.

thanks for responding :) I believe one is only a true writer if only one believes in what they write. So I really appreciate your comment. It's good to know that there are so many others that love to do what I do. Write!!

Great write by the way . I write for alot of reason. For 1 . I write to release how I am feeling within. for 2.I write as a leader Da KinG with motivation and love. When a person post a poem I believe they do it cause they love to do it and sharing that love with the reader cause we aren't getting paid per post. for 3. I feel like I need it cause sometimes if I am down reading other people's work or my own I become stronger and feel that much better. The world loves to brain wash .with my poetry I unbrain wash. I would rather read the truth then to hear this fake rappers now a days. I am one of a kind with mine. All the real is not dead or locked up they will tell you that cause they want you to follow the wrong. I am real and I am not locked up or dead . Most of all I do speech for my people and give knowledge. Fake people claim to be KinG but like the way it sounds and attention. I am Da KinG cause I give motivation and knowledge etc.People who claim KinG what are they the KiNG OF.LOL sorry so long but all in all poetry is my life and the way I will live forever like tupac with music I want to be remembered as Da KinG with poetry I have alot of personality you can't just read one of my poems and say that is all me .

Thanks for your comment! I believe that we all possess a small portion of wisdom as we grow and learn. We know things that we can share with others that will help them learn and grow, and think beyond their current set of circumstances. Keep it up!

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
