One Foot in Front of the Other

    You take a step forward
And where do you find yourself
    Sometimes you look backward
    See where you left yourself

When you put one foot in front
You will find the other comes along
    You see yourself in front
And somewhere back where you trail along

It’s the first step that’s the hardest
It takes you along your way
Once started its hard to stop except to rest
If you are excited it’s easy to stay

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
