    The Lie

    THE LIE

    I cried three days

before I walked out that door,

    Your ridiculous behaviors

    I couldn’t take anymore.

It was the brokenness of our marriage

    that brought me down,

    Where I sometimes still stray,

    sadness on the ground.

The empty emotion on your face,

    I simply couldn’t see,

    That stoney coldness

    Frightened me.

    The compassion that you lack

    Was such a shock

    Left me reeling,

    Heart heavy as a rock.

My life feels the loss of

    What I thought I had

    Not realizing until too late,

    It was so bad.

How could I have been so blind

    Not to see

    That you wore a façade

    Only meant to fool me

All along it was just a lie

    And I’m such a fool

    To have ever believed

    In love or in you!

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
