The Missing Piece

Was I that open or are you
just a master smythe of secrets?
That girl scout badge of honesty
I was so sure would protect me
melted down into your smoldering eyes
and through your wild hair...

The blackest hole of Hollywood
sincere as Madison Avenue
but without the glitz and shine
could I have been so small?
The wolfman scented out my need
like vultures from the air.

While being mercilessly ravaged
do street whores see the Walmart prints
and count the cracks and wonder
like a deer within the headlights
just how the hell they got there
and might they still get out alive?

Long after you had stumbled off
the scent of fresh meat in flared nostrils
the sun reminded me that mornings
are lifes way of saying sorry
and if you'd like you have another chance
to start again and get it right.

And when I shook myself
the fear and shock were deadened
and fell inward where they still remain
and shudder in the dark when I'm alone.
In my pocket then I found the piece
that you were seeking without knowing,

I washed it
with a silent tear
of shame
and took it home.

Oh but this is dark! Abstractions clothed in concrete banalities shape the wasted life with reminders of how cheaply opportunity gets sold. One very small qibble from a perfectionist: Lines 11, and 12 really should agree in number. The added syllable of the particle "a" does not detract from the flow, and adds to the congruity.

Thank you Harver, for your comment and observation. I will review those lines. Rewrites don't always happen so quickly, as it is usually my own tired eyes that catch a flaw on the 15th take, maybe.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.

T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
