What If

What If

What of all the people walking hand in hand today
If the sun forgot to rise again what would those people say

No dawn at which to waken them, No dusk to usher night
Through the darkness that surrounds them, thus hath hidden them from sight

What with all the glints of light once viewed within her eyes
If beauty were to vanish just as light throughout the skies

Would it be enough to search the stars for light that's barely there
Would it be enough to take a knee and find the faith in prayer

What of all the darkness hides, with evil all about
If Voices remain quiet out of fear, it seek them out

Could love actually thrive just as the phrase portrays it blind
Would warmth and touch be just enough to leave his voice behind

What beyond, the sound of sadness, or of sudden laughter, lies
If one could not whisper sweet, of nothing lullaby's

A simple sleight of hand properly placed upon her hips
A gently emplaced kiss upon her upper and lower lips

What if what we take for granted suddenly wasn’t there?
What if suddenly everything, became a lot like air?

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
