What It Takes

My world’s a winter wasted place,
With snow and dust and clouded skies.
Here you come, walking through town
In shorts as if it’s spring.
How I love when your presence makes me
Warm, but only just, and for just a while
Do you have what it takes to chase away
The snow with all your strength?
I’ve never liked the winter days.
Tell me, can you make them disappear?

You’re beautiful, and your eyes
Calm me to my senses. They bring
The rain that nourishes my ground,
And keeps my body cool.
But I don’t want the showers that pass
Before you’ve had the chance to blink
I need the storm and thunder that precedes
The summer’s humid haze
Tell me, will I see the autumn leaves?

Basically, you make me happier than anyone
I’ve ever known, but I don’t know
If in your bones is the strength
That loves and fills and satisfies.
In my winter wasted place I’ll wait
For you until the spring
Or until you’re willing to chase away
The snow and dust and clouded skies.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
