Alone on an Island

Poem Commentary

A trouble shared is a trouble halved...we don't have to walk through life alone.

Alone on an Island

I have spent my life alone on an island

Surrounded by a wild and stormy sea

I do not know why I took so long to understand

That the only one keeping me here is me

The sea of despair that I am surrounded by

I created myself so no one could come here

I thought I knew the many important reasons why

Now I realize I need my loved ones to be near

I don't want to be on this island anymore

I now want to take my head out of the sands

Open my eyes and see on the distant shore

People who care for me reaching out their hands

This is something, I know, that only I can do

I need to build a bridge to those who really care

I know it wont happen overnight, it's true

But I don't want to be alone on my island of despair

As I walk across the bridge and open my eyes

I see a new world of wonders ahead

Life is full of hellos and, sadly, goodbyes

Simply life's cycle and nothing to dread

I wont be alone on an island feeling so bad

I'll cross my bridge to my family and friends

It is alright sometimes to be low and so sad

But the more help I accept, the quicker it mends

No longer will I be alone on an island

The wild sea will hold no fear for me

I have the power to take each offered hand

And simply be the best that I can be

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
