CRICKET!

CRICKET!

That word makes me shake

CRICKET!

I can't help shiver and shake

CRICKET!

The thought makes me want to take flight

CRICKET!

Keep it away, get it out of my sight

It's not the fact that my team just lost

Or anything to do with the membership cost

Nothing to do with the sport at all

But a tiny insect is my downfall

Just one look at that hopping bug

With its gangly legs and its alien mug

Fills me with dread and an awful fear

My heart starts pounding loud and clear

A cricket always seems to lie in wait

Then hops straight to me at a rapid rate

Yes I can dodge it and believe me, I can run

But the horrible panicky feeling's no fun

It is not because they are hopping bugs

And I've even seen creatures with uglier mugs

The grasshopper and locust don't terrify me

A cockroach is gross but squashes easily

I can handle a spider and will deal with a bee

Both of which are more harmful to me

Why do I feel the cricket is such a threat?

Why does this insect make me worry and fret?

The cricket is a creature so very small

It's not like it can beat me up in a brawl

To a cricket I must seem very, very tall

I'm stronger and faster, but I'm still appalled

My phobia of crickets I'd like to control

To stare them down calmly will be my goal

Practise deep breathing, don't turn and run

Control my fear, although I know it won't be fun

One day I look forward to seeing this insect

Watching it hop away while feeling no effect

Slowly and surely I hope to desensitize

Till I barely notice them hop past my eyes

CRICKET!

There will be no reaction to the name

CRICKET!

That day I'll be thinking only the game

CRICKET!

Go team, win this match for me

CRICKET!

HA!! I'm bug phobia free

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
