Poem Commentary

This was written in 2006 on Joel's 21st Birthday and sent to him as he served in Iraq.

American / My Son (Joel)

Here's to you Marine,
of whom I am so Prowd,
You Serve so Strong and Stand so Tall,
you inspire-others to aspire,
The uniform so few will wear.

I stand in awe of you
and reguard your deed's true valor.
My heart it swells, that's true...
I know;
you will not back up
you will not break
your resolve is forged
only orders! you'll take.

You stand accused
the world will say - how unjust!
this course they take
Knowing in your absence...a more sure mistake.

The country you serve
they mock, they deride.
So blind that, You provide
the foundation for freedom - the very one,
on which their speach does ride.

I Love you and forgive them,
they're Ignorant, they dont know.
That what you fight to hand them,
they can...No other way Grow!

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
