    Big Fish

I stand at the edge of the ocean,
the wind stinging my face with sand.
I taste salt on my lips,
I feel rain on my hands.

    I stand like a lighthouse,
    shining my light,
    competing with the moon's shine,
when out of the waves rises a young man.

Starfish and seashells in his hair,
he rides the waves into the shore.
He shakes his head of water,
drops like diamonds flying from his brow.

I feel the rain harder still,
    lightning flashes,and the sea roars.
Thunder rolls, yet I stand strong,
    a lighthouse shining my light.

who is this youth who now faces me?
who seems unafraid of the storm about us?
I ask him his name and his business,
he remains mute, staring into my eyes.

He steps forward, and before I can react,
    he whispers in my ear.
Be not afraid, there is no time,
    no death under heaven.
    Life is a circle,
    there's only alpha and omega,
    world without end.

I am stunned by his words,
    I do not understand.
    What does it mean?
    And then the kiss.
    Salt and sea,
    on my tongue.

The moon hides her face behind a cloud,
embarassed by this show of affection.
I stand like a lighthouse, beaming.
    He takes my hand,
    pulling me towards the water,
    to leave the land.

I am chest deep in the sea before I know it,
I am not a swimmer, and begin to fear.
'Twas then that my legs fused together.
My arms became short, like fins.
    My skin was scaled,
I was turning into a big fish.

This youth was a fisher of men,
    bringing into the fold,
    the biggest souls,
    under the stars.
He cast his net far and wide,
and I was caught sure enough.

A big fish is an old soul,
passing through the nets of mortal men.
but this youth was not of this world,
    on that you can depend.
He was sent from on high,
to bring back those he chose,
    the big fish,
    the greatest souls.

I began to swim, I leaped from the water,
I dove far beneath the waves.
I saw the creatures of the deep,
    I began to pray.
I know not the words I said,
but the plea was sent to God,
    keep me from man's nets,
    spare me from the rod.

I never saw that youth again,
and I've traveled all seven seas.
    I am a big fish,
    an old soul,
I know the secrets of life.
    All things come in threes,
There is father, son and holy ghost,
    past, present and future.
    three dimensions
     mind, body and spirit.
yes, all things come in threes.

    Three wishes I made
when I was just a man,
    I stood like a lighthouse,
    strong and tall,
    beaming out to sea,
    my light outshining
    the jealous moon
    stars in my eyes,
    I remember the wind,
    the stining sand,
    the salt on my lips,
and the rain on my hands,
Now I am a big fish,
    an old soul,
He will come for you too one day,
so like a lighthouse you must stand,
shining your light for all to say.

Another excellent piece. vey visual. You create a painting with your words that puts your reader in the moment. very well done.-tonya

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
