Butterfly.......(La Mariposa)

Poem Commentary

This was written to a very dear friend, Maria, when I had been injured and was going to Physical Therapy. She was always cheering me on, through my good and bad days. When I was in s wheelchair, she said I would soon be flying. This one's for you Maria!! I'm now walking, dancing and still working out! Thank you, hermana!!

Butterfly.......(La Mariposa)

I feel like a butterfly in a cocoon,
Just waiting for my wings to get stronger soon.
I know the cocoon is just a test,
To make sure I'm ready to fly my very best.

My wings get stronger when I fight my way through,
I'm no longer weak, this is true.
So I'll spread my wings and try to fly,
I can't give up, or I'll surely die.

I want to fly and to soar,
Until I can't fly anymore.
I'm tired of this so called "shell."
I want to get better, I want to get well.

My body is the cocoon, my spirit, the butterfly.
As I emerge from the cocoon, I will head for the sky.
With glorious colors on my wings,
I'll no longer look back at anything.

So stand back, and let me fly,
Upward, upward to the sky.

A beautiful tribute to a friend who helped you through a difficult time. Reminds me of times when I accompanied my father to his cancer treatments, and played music for him, help him through some of his worst moments. The power of love is greater than we know. Peace and Love, Spence

Thank you very uch. When I was injured I was in a wheelchair for about 3 months, not even able to feed myself. I had a torn rotator cuff, fractured knee, on my right side and cerebral palsy on my left side. I went to physical therapy the first time wheeled in by a family member. It took 3 months for me to first be able to get out of my wheelchair. I would cry with pain, but my friend Maria always encouraged me and made me smile. Every step I took I took not only for myself, but for my team of encouraging friends like Maria. Now, I am walking, exercising and appreciating the times my friends were there for me. Yes, love is a great emotion. Peace.....abuelita

I am so sorry to hear of your pain, but rejoice in knowing you are surrounded with love. I always liked the expression, Friends are the family we pick for ourselves. Seems like you picked some wonderful members to add to your family. Peace and Love, Spence

Wow, this is a beautiful and inspiring write that should hang literally on every wall of a hospital or pt clinic. I work with patients and they have lost hope and with that have lost all mobility and the chance to have more. The spirit can soar and the spirit can heal even when the body says no the spirit says yes and yes it will be. God willing of course. I loved it! thank you for the read. hugz

I am humbled by your words. A great deal of credit goes to those caring friends, family and my therapists at pt. Without the support and encouragement from all of them I might not be known as Tiny Dancer" and "Sassy Salsa Momma" lol I am also stubborn...haha ((hugzz))

This is so awesome, what a wonderful metaphor. Butterflies are strong and very beautiful. We all have are cocoons to fight through, they makes us who we are today. :) Rita

Thank you, Rita! The idea of a story I told to my children came in 1991. I had a lump in my breast, and I did story telling, about a cocoon and a butterfly, our spirit and body to try to explain what I thought might be cancer to my young children. As it turned out, the lump was malignant, and then many years later, my injury to my body reminded me of the story. So, a poem was born.....;-)
