    Freedom is Not Mine

     No, I have never known the feeling of being caged in by bars,
    tied down by oppression, slave to another.
    My mind is my captor.
    It weighs me down like a ton of bricks,
    keeps me on a short leash,
    with freedom just out of my reach.
    Images of a childhood lost, and crushed dreams.
    My past is sharper than any barbed wire.
    I wish these memories would turn loose of me.
    My soul yearns to be free.
    But freedom is not mine.
