My Mother

My Mother

I look at you, my mother,
and see scarred hands,
from long hours of work
that carried me from birth.
Tired eyes, from worrying
about overdue bills
and us, your children,
when we were hurt and ill.
A heart filled with love,
when surely we didn't deserve it.
Raising us single handedly,
you selflessly gave us everything you could,
and still do.
I hope that I will be
as strong a mother, as you.

mamasan commented on My Mother

I just listened to a powerful love song; full of gratitude and love. I do hope the poet sends her mama a copy. Its beautiful and something tells me the poet is as strong as the mother she loves.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.

T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
