    MEMORY

         I WAITED FOR HIM
         THE ANGEL OF DEATH
ALL THROUGH THAT NIGHT IN JUNE.

I LISTENED, LISTENED AND LISTENED SOME MORE
         HOLDING MY BREATH
         WHEN YOUR BREATHING SLOWED.

         HAD HE COME?
         WAS HE FINALLY HERE?
         THEN YOUR BREATHING RESUMED
AND I LISTENED, LISTENED AND LISTENED SOME MORE

YOU WERE SO READY TO LET GO AND
I WAS SO WILLING TO LET GO OF YOU
WHY DID HE WAIT THIS LONG?

I PUT MY FACE CLOSE TO YOURS
KISSED YOU LIGHTLY ON YOUR CHEEK
         AND WHISPERED A GOOD NIGHT-WISH
         AS DAYBREAK JUST BEGAN.

AGAIN I LISTENED, LISTENED AND LISTENED SOME MORE
AND WHEN THE FIRST SUNRAYS HIT THE TOP OF THE BIRCH
THE DAILY RITUAL OF THE ROBIN BEGAN
HIS CHIRPING AND TWITTERING AS IN GREETING THE SUN

         SUDDENLY I KNEW,
         YOU EXHALED JUST ONCE,
         NO MORE IN... ONLY OUT
         NO MORE IN...NO MORE IN

         THE ANGEL OF DEATH
         HAD SPREAD HIS WINGS
TO TAKE YOU FAR FROM ME.
THE ANGEL OF DEATH HAD WHISKED YOU AWAY
CRADLING YOUR SOUL IN HIS ARMS

Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece. Your insights are "right on". My finger seems stuck on 10 this afternoon.

My note sounded more thn a little callous. Thank you for sharing these most sacred feelings with us.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
