Mistake Of Mine

Mistake Of Mine

Begging words and pleading eyes,
cannot risk their disappointment,
I give in with little protest.
A mistake born of weakness,
made without realizing,
until it was too late.
Too late to stop the laughter,
too late to prevent the humiliation,
way too late to stop the hated tears.
Why must it be so hard for me?
Why can I not say "No"?
Will I always be this way,
unable to resist them?
I hope I will not.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
