    On Gossamer Wings

She sits each night in a swing held by silvery moon beams
She watches the field for the twinkling of the fireflies.
The symphony music plays softly while she quietly dreams,
She thinks of her handsome lover and closes her eyes.

He comes to her on swift silent gossamer wings,
Wrapping his strong arms gently around her, and touches her hair.
She feels his touches, catches her breath, and her heart sings,
She is now content and happy .. they comprise the perfect pair.

They spread a blanket and lie side by side in the field lit by the moon,
Two souls joined together by the love within their hearts,
With kisses shared and hands entwined they lay close and spoon,
They drink each other in as all too soon they must part.

They drift off holding each other and dreaming sweet dreams,
When morning comes what was real is no longer, it seems.
But just for the night, they are together once more.
Though he may be gone to eternal life, she still waits at the door.

She rises in the morn alone, it is back to her world,
Yet she wishes, all through her daily routine,
That still and forever in his arms she were still curled,
Perhaps, one day soon her king will come back to reclaim his queen.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
