Poem Commentary

This poem is dedicated to Phoebe Prince, a local teenage girl who was beaten and bullied by her classmates, and ended up taking her own life.

DEDICATED TO PHOEBE PRINCE

I.

They were young

And their cruelty was unfair

But they knew no moral

Not taught well by their

Teachers or parents.

The words they used

Were ugly but

What harm is in words?

-only to the recipient

they felt worth scarring.

II.

They still teased

As she hung above their heads

Tied by the rope they

fastened for her.

with what was said

and written they helped

a vine grow with

thorns that dug.

As it grew it wrapped

Around her neck

And closed her throat

And the drumbeat

of her heart

would not be heard

anymore.

III.

Does her spirit

Now free

Breathe deeper

As we feel her now?

IV.

If we can understand

Can we clean up

The blood and tears?

Ca we stop the vines

From growing

And will we?

Dude this is good-------------------------------------------

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
