Sleeping

Sleeping

In peaceful dreams
Sleeping comes up short
Nothing but the night to warm
Cold souls from the sun lights

To weak to fight
Meaningless things that should not matter
Over load of time and space
Burned but that which is unseen

No time to breath
Nor to understand
Just lifeless in sleep
Yet no rest to come

It’s hard to believe
Or even understand
Where is comes from
Or where is should come from

Just sleeping
Not so easy
Restless and meaningless
Eating at my soul

"restlessness eating the soul" ———this is the root of poetry.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
