    Poem Commentary

Written in 1999, as baseball strikes were common and minor league games were more popular. It costs us about $150 for an afternoon of "family fun" to see the Atlanta Braves play.

    The future??? of baseball?

Spring is in the air and sports questions arise.
"Granpa, what is baseball?  Why did people want to catch flies?
Arbitration...that's a big word. Granpa, tell me what it means.

The old man stops a moment.
"Baseball was part of the American dream.
But then the people wanted more, greed got into everyone's mind.
They got tired of hearing 'compromise' and sports fans left the game behind.

"There's a Hall of Fame for Baseball, but now, not many go to see.
The sport used to be real popular.  Folks didn't mind that it wasn't free.
I wish it would have stayed around. I think you would like the game.
But owners and players just couldn't agree and baseball,
    it just wasn't the same.

"The simple things seem to disappear, so fast you don't see them go.
    People don't always think straight.
Baseball was a SPORT we played long ago."

Sad, it is too bad that greed so clouds the game.....I prefer to see baseball as a return to youth and promise and never focus on the side your poem identifies, but still a good read Thanks

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
