The Strong Hand That I Hold

The Strong Hand That I Hold

We part, we part like an easy goodbye
our feet grown farther, and my heart sighs
A goodbye for now, you've taught me how
saying farewell can hurt
but in time we'll learn the pain of the burn
will soon be forgot

I dance, I dance with your face in mind
your voice it rings, your eyes they shine
Chasing the fearful who are less than cheerful
and we will be preserved
the malicious many whose hate is plenty
their spot in heaven you reserve

Empty, Empty are my hours waiting
soon when the clouds lift, song i'll be making
Throw the stone like you've always known
the conflict will soon end
and so my dear then answer is clear
we'll turn when we reach the bend

Look there, look there at the clear blue sky
thanking Him you are here, not questioning why
I salute your deeds a plenty
and embrace your still new frame
keep your feet stationed by mine
like the spark that started the flame

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
