  • There is Salvation and Damnnation within the choice of words we define ourselves with.

Poem Commentary

Just because you are knocked down once doesn't mean you can't stand back up! To those whom this poem is meant for I know you understand.

Unbroken

Blackened eye ...Bloody nose.........
Curled up like a fetus just taking the blows
Drifting away to a quiet beach with a gentle wind caressing my hair,
Inside my mind sheltered from anger, violence, and fear.
He is finally done he says he is tired and his hands are now sore,
with assurances of a swift recovery because tomorrow I will be taught to obey once more.
Children crying, Shattered heart
Broken body, soul and spirit torn apart.
He leaves for work I grab our stuff
The battered woman in the mirror finally has had enough.
Rush the kids, pack the trunk tight
His punching bags will be gone when he gets home tonight.
Driving for days at a neck breaking pace
finally stopping at where I hope is a safe place.
Oh no that sound I am sure it is his car
how could he have found us we have run so far.
His shouts are unmistakable as he pounds on the door
Terror is crippling as I sink to the floor
Body frozen, mind working slow, his threats through the door are clear as a bell.
"I told you I'd never be alone I'll kill you today I'll send you to hell!"
with tears in my eyes I tuck my children into bed
as I walk out to meet him I think"this time I am dead!"

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((silence))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((sirens)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

As I blink away darkness I hears the words from the cop......
It was self defense ma'am Glad to see you came out on top.
Confused and dazed as red and blue lights assult my eyes,
I walk to the yard where his crumpled body lyes.
All battered and broken he looks like a child
witnesses are saying "She went mad, and was wild."
More dead than alive as they start to take him away
"I'll be back for you all" I hear him say.
For the first time in years without so much as a hint of fear,
I smile and respond I'll be waiting right here!!!

wow simply breath taking very deep and full of emotion i could feel all the pain and fear in this with each line you wrote. it is sad that this happens to so many women in our society and what is even more painful is knowing that there are people that sit back and do nothing knowing all along whats happening I like latin wish there were more women that were able to stand up and fight back and get a piece of themselves back like the woman did here in your poem great poem this i am sure will touch many and aid them in getting the will to break free a 10 in my book all the way

This is a very powerful poem. If only more women in this situation had the courage and bravery to leave. I know for some it is an impossible task and if this is about you or someone you know then I hope they are happy and well now. If not I believe it will help others with your strong words.

This is such a sensitive subject, and what a brave effort that you have accomplished here. And I appreciate the ending, it wasn't a happily ever after ending but a triumphant one, and too many stories like this end in tragedy. I feel, as the reader, I could emphathize with the story more knowing that she's alive, and fought to stay that way.

Poetry is what is lost in translation.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
