You Can't Be My Lover

You Can't Be My Lover

I fell in love with you from the start
You filled the empty spaces in my heart.
Our lives took a turn in another direction
You're the man I loved and shared my affection.
I called your job, but the number had changed
I searched the phone directory for your name.
I knew that I would never find another man like you
There was no middle ground, what else could I do.
Through pain and disappointment I have tread
Sometimes things are better off unsaid.
When we met again both of us were married
I have to give up the torch that I once carried.
If I could turn back the hands of time
You would be the man that I called mine.
I'm free again but you're not available to me
I realize that some things aren't meant to be.
I don't know about tomorrow or how it will end
You can't be my lover, but you will always be my friend.

Aww, this is a bittersweet one. Well, the ending is. It's absolutely beautiful, and I imagine you have an ache that is soothed a bit by your friendship, but always there. You may not, but that's just what I see in your poem

I found a true love. I think it is better to have love and lost than never to have found true love at all.

Thanks for your comments. We do meet many people on our journey.

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.
