Down But Not Out

Poem Commentary

To a friend who remain nameless who was finally able to get her kids and herself to safety. I am so proud of you hunny. Enjoy your freedom. You have more than earned it.

Down But Not Out

There she lays,
Broken and bruised.
Her clothes are in tatters,
But that is nothing new.

She watches as her blood drips,
Upon the old wooden floor.
But she makes not a sound,
Or else he will deal her more.

She must lie there and wait,
For the moment when she knows he is gone.
Either through the front door,
Or to the bed down the hall.

Every night with him,
Is always the same.
He comes home again drunk,
And she is somehow to blame.

 When will this torment,
That she always endures,
Come to an end?
She is not sure.

But one day peace will come.
She will soar away on mended wings.
She will have the strength to walk away.
She will know what it is to be free.

My mind's eye was grabbed and forced not only to see and feel, but the understand and commit to memory all the pain, fear, anger, worry, hope and faith expressed in every line of the poem.....Great Job

Wow, how I feel for her, reminds me of my childhood when my dad would assault my mom. I hope "she" gets the strength to LEAVE him!!!!!! I hope "she" knows its not ok what he's doing!!! I hope "she knows she deserves better treatment!

i promise that I am not the "she" in this poem. i was in a relationship similar to it many years ago and i flat out refuse to ever go through it again. i have a hardworking, loving, smart ass man who his also a wonderful father to our 2 children as well as to my daughter who i had with my ex. I do honestly have a friend who I work with who was going through this with her ex husband. she is out now but it is not my place to put her name out there. I am truly sorry for what you witnessed in your youth. no child should have to see that.

To have great poets there must be great audiences too.
