Heart (Lines X)

His voice is gentle
His whispers soothe achy sleep
But he keeps his wary distance
For fear of their misunderstanding

He brings you to life
He lights up your eyes
Grey, opaque - he truly sees
A hint of blue in your madness sea

But when the door is locked
And window painted shut
He gives you one last sad glance
And a masochistic smile

Right. Now.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
