Poem Commentary

I wrote this poem in February 2007, as an assignment for one of my graduate classes...I was going through a tough time with my 2 oldest kids...

I am from....

I am from a different culture
I am from a land viewed as pasta and sauce, but so much more you could ever know
I am from a mother who drank and forgot
I am from a mother who took her place
I am from a sister who is my best friend
I am from a father so loved, who didn't know
I am from the sadness of a child locked inside
I am from a God who saved me, who gave me hope
I am form two brothers I couldn't know
I am from the mother I wanted to be
I am from the failure my children see me to be
I am from the unending love I feel for them
I am from the hope one day they'll understand
I am from love, hope, faith
I am from now until I no longer am

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
