My Sacrifice

Poem Commentary

I wrote this for my kids a few years back. I still feel the same.

My Sacrifice

This is to my kids,
Joey, Chris and Sarah.
I love you.
I watch as my kids grow
right before my eyes
It stuns me , though I know
This is my sacrifice
It's like only yesterday
I bounced them on my knee
They'd laugh and giggle and run around
then run right back to me
It's just like yesterday
I doctored Joey's knee
Kissed it better and bandaged it up
and held him close to me
It seems like only yesterday
Little Chris came running hard
screaming to the top of his lungs
"There's a big dog in the yard"!
And it seems like yesterday
that Sarah asked me why
The sky is blue, The clouds are white
and why do big men cry?
And now they are older
they don't need me as much anymore
They come and go as they please
They barely shut the door
They play on the computer
they play their music loud
they even party behind my back
hoping I don't find out
Joey's driving me around
Really proud of his permit
I can only wonder
where all the time went
But this is my sacrifice
I'm willing to pay in life
Cause the thought of losing them
Cuts my heart just like a knife.
But would I change a thing?
Give up any of the hurt or pain, memories?
Not a chance I guarantee -
For my kids mean this world to me.
