Poem Commentary

I was just remembering the good old days with my best friends from school. Everything seemed so dramatic back that, but looking back, we all had it so good.

Simpler Times

I remember a time when unrequited was love,

When things used to be simple for all of us.

Our biggest decision was what not to wear,

And our biggest secrets spilled in truth or dare.

We used to complain about doing home work,

And yell at our sisters for stealing our shirts.

We drew little hearts around boys that we liked,

And got around town on only our bikes.

When horror movies once gave us chills,

And sneaking out late was still full of thrills.

We could make twenty dollars last us a week,

And we had extra time for walks by the creek.

We’d talk on the phone when we were apart,

And a promise meant something because we’d cross our heart.

We were there for each other throughout thick and thin.

Sometimes I wish things were like they had been.

Now we have bills and jobs and no time.

We slap on a smile and pretend to be fine.

We fight to survive in this world day by day,

But we’re losing a bit of ourselves on the way.

What once made us smile is gone, in the past,

And we’re reaching our end still a little too fast.

If all we had left was just one more day,

I bet we’d tell each other, “I’m sorry things changed.”

It doesn't get any easier as you get older, don't let anyone fool you. Unless you hit the lottery that is.

Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
