The Rudeness of Thoughts

The Rudeness of Thoughts

Thoughts are intrusive.
They are shattering, unstoppable, and especially ruthless,
Pushing all others away.

Thoughts are invaluable.
They are fleeting, swift, and usually full of empty words,
Thinking only of the present.

Thoughts are self obsessed.
They are whining, spiteful, and putting others down for their own sake,
Since they are convinced that the person cannot hear them.

Thoughts are exclusive.
They are shutting others out, deceiving, and too private.
Barely any of them are shared from mouth to mouth, provoking new thoughts.

Thoughts are opposites.
They are not what you want to hear, and sometimes over obsessive,
Keeping you up at night, shaking in protest

Yet, thoughts are human.
Humans are intrusive, invaluable, self-obsessed, exclusive, and opposites.
But, that is why humans are humans.

At low points in my life, I try to drown out these intrusive obsessive thoughts with mind-numbing television. the last line is not a convincing conclusion for me. But I completely understand the rest of the poem.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.

T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
