The Voice of Reason

The Voice of Reason
By
Kelly M. Kirkpatrick

Were you the voice of reason
In the hour of discontent?
Or were you the voice of passion
When your reasons had all been spent?

I have seen America
Brought down by the waves.
I have seen the home fires burning.
Do they still burn for the brave?

I know that I can love.
I know that I can care.
I may not be too pretty,
But I hope I am aware.

I have heard the church bells ring out
For a favorite son.
I have seen the flag withdrawn for him
Beneath a setting sun.
Did he fight for liberty,
Or did he die in vain?
The stranger could not see his face
Nor know his mother's pain.

We need a voice of reason
In this hour of discontent.
You might be the voice of reason
When your passions have all been spent,

Have you seen America
Brought down by the waves?
Have you seen the home fires burning?
Do they still burn for the brave?

I know that you can love.
I know that you can care.
You might not be too pretty,
But I hope you are aware.
