Welcome To Heaven

Welcome To Heaven

I saw heaven's door and I went up and knocked
and when the door opened I was shocked
to see a bearded man in a white robe
saying welcome to heaven, this is your new home

I saw a bright light, then heard a voice speak
it said you are my son, my promises please keep
I saw an angel who was playing a song
on a harp of gold all the days long

Jesus approached and I gazed with a smile
He said son I have been waiting here some while
just then another knock came from behind the door
then entered more followers of Jesus my Lord

My eyes had to adjust, was this just a vision
was I really in Heaven, with the Divine King of Redemption
I looked all around and everything shone in gold
there it was God's most holy throne

I knew then this was not a dream
everything was so real and I started to scream
Then a face, mostly bright lights gave way
son you have come to Heaven to live with me today

It was God speaking, He said your in eternal glory
You kept my commandments, this is the end of your story
The angels looked upon with a great big grin
and said no longer my son will you live among sin

Dear Colt, // One of my all-time favorite poets is Gerard Manley Hopkins, who writes magnificent poetry in praise of God and God's creations. I love his poetry. // I do not have the same faith as either he or you. But I am a human being. I care about people. I would never want to disturb the quiet spirit of a faith-based belief. Indeed, I evny it to some extent. Doubts plague me, questions consume me. // Now, as to its technical skill: I really like your use of what is called half-rhymes: such as speak / keep, and vision / redemption, robe / home. You use full rhymes, too, but using these half-rhyme adds flavor to your poem. // You have skillfully organized the poem into well-wrought quatrains. // Your poem is beautiful. What a lovely description of the Christian ideal of heaven. I hope and pray with all my heart that you will find something like this when your life journey, too, comes an end. // Despite my doubts and questions, and in spite of what happened to my precious friend Brian, I still believe that sometimes prayers are answered--how and why, I don't know. But I think it happens someitmes. Will you pray for me, that God may forgive me for me for having very little faith, and perhaps find a place in the grace of his well-praised love, for me too? I would apprecaite that greatly. // Thank you for this poem, and thank you for asking me to read it. 10 from me. --Michael LP, Mr. Poet
