Bathory

Bathory

Look out into the distant past,

Search within your dreams.

There you’ll find the tower,

Filled with haunting screams.

Screams of victims long since gone,

Screams of the murderess.

Her screams marking out dark vengeance,

Screams of pain but not distress.

Bathed in the blood of innocent girls,

Beauty the name of her God.

Hundreds of girls pledged their lives for her,

And worshipped the ground she trod.

Darkness hidden from her frozen world,

Her heart was locked away.

Sealed in a stone tower room,

Screams her companions each day.

Today her beauty is a legend,

But her deeds live in infamy.

And so the screams go haunting on,

Each a sentence for Bathory.

Elizabeth Bathory! The most notorious serial killer of all time, over 600 young girls murdered because she thought their blood made her look younger! Then Henry the VIII locked her away in a tower alive to die a slow death! Oh by the way Nice Poem!!!

Henry VIII? He died 63 years before her trial, and she was Hungarian, not English: the British crown wouldn't have had any jurisdiction, or probably any idea what was going on! :-P It was King Matthias that ordered her trial and punishment :-)

You're right I had to go back to a term paper I did on her back in the 9th grade to make sure, but you're right!

Another one with good flow and lyrical quality. I especially like the Elizabeth Bathory subject matter. Now round this out with a poem about Vlad Tepes and you'll have great bookend poems.

You really like to embrace the dark side. You really got a knack for writing dark poetry. I'll be reading more of your works.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.

T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
