From a Thankful Heart

My father’s a special person for he taught me many things,

When I recall these precious memories a smile is what they bring.

He taught me to shoot hoops with him, and swing a bat so hard,

He even taught me tetherball we set up in the yard.

He taught me to love popcorn that he made upon the stove,

His love for me was constant, a bond so strong we wove.

He tried to teach me Algebra I know he did the best he could,

But it just wasn’t going to happen, I really never understood.

He bought me my first stereo and with the Happy Goodman we would dance,

I loved to spend my time with him whenever there was a chance.

I learned to record his messages for the radio each week,

I’d hold up cards to let him know just how long he had to speak.

When my heart was down and broken and sorrow came my way,

It was my father who was always there to embrace with love each day.

He helped me through that dark time with a scripture for each day,

I learned my Savior loved me even when I couldn’t pray.

Oh there are many things he taught me and that is why I’m here today,

He always pointed me to Jesus, the Truth, the Life, and the Way.

I can’t find the words to tell him just how much he means to me,

And thank him that he showed me,

My Savior’s all I need.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
