    Harvest of Betrayal

    What is this seed
    -------that------
    Once planted,
    Grows with speed
    Into an ivy
    Of the deepest hues
    of green?

    No ordinary vine,
    this one,
    As this is a seed
    Sewn not in the bounds
    of nature,
    But----
    Embedded in the wake
    of betrayal,
    Deep in the fields
    of the heart.

    Travels and breathes,
    And bears the bitter
    leaves
    That shadow even the
    happy occasion
    Of forgiving...

    One would think
    That the act of forgiveness
    Is the foregone
    conclusion
    Of redemption.

    Not so.

    For this is the seed
    of doubt,
    Entwigs and entwines
    without
    The enhancement
    Such as endows
    The face of castle walls...

    Instead, betrayal
    has adorned
    A heart with ivy
    thick and thorned,
    And all too often
    the occasion to question.

    And so---
    To bring full circle
    From when first cast out,
    Reap what is sewn
    ----only further doubt:
    Has that heart, then,
    truly forgiven?

A seed by itself, is just a seed, until planted in fertile ground. 10 from me.

Doubt, forgiveness betrayal, all start with seeds. A sad metaphor indeed. Sally

Ahhh.... this seed may indeed have many names...bitterness, envy, unforgiveness, adultery...need I go on? Terrific, superb, exquisite write, MSV. Thanks for sharing. Ten thumbs way up.

I like your development of this analogy and the form you chose to put it in the short verse that pause between each thought. Nice work. Thanks!

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.
