    Inside a Debaters Head

The only place where crazy people are accepted,
the only place where sane ones are rejected.
Talking to ceilings is a normal pastime,
people walking past mutter in rhyme.
People in silly hats talk to the walls,
everyone stares when a silence falls.
Dressed up kids wave their hands in the air,
boys in suits whine as Mom combs their hair.
Girls fly past muttering their interps furiously,
children in the hallway listen in curiously.
Little kids throw toys as we strive to think faster,
crying babies distract, brothers shoot fake blasters.
Walking through the crowded stairs and corridors,
frantically checking for my number over each door.
Uncomfortable shoes and itchy, fancy clothing,
I run quickly, the door to my room is closing!
My judge shakes my hand and I sit down,
trying not to feel like or act like a clown.
Nerves make me tremble and my knees shake,
please, Lord! Don't let me make a mistake!
Fakes smiles all around as we hide our fear,
did I say that? Hope the judge didn't hear!
Sleeping in the hallways, try to get some rest,
if I'm this exhausted how can I do my best?

You've pictured the life of a debater quite well. You should send this one to the NCFA website.

You think so? Maybe I will. I actually wrote this in between two debate rounds, sitting with my latptop in the corner of the main room at the houston open last year. :p it was really relaxing.

Count it all joy when you fall into diverse trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
