    Who We Are

This is who I am, this is the real me.
This is who I am when no one can see.
This is who I am, the person I want to be.
I sing in the shower, I sing when I run.
I like to dance, and laugh, and have fun.
If I act like my dad I'll make up a pun.
I like to draw nearly all of the time.
I like to write down words that rhyme.
When I'm the most upset I say I'm fine.
I wear capes, funky socks, and weird ties.
I ride a bike so I can pretend I can fly.
I struggle with the temptation to tell lies.

This is who you are, the person I see.
This is who you are when you are with me.
This is who you are, the person I know you can be.
You make me laugh no matter how I feel.
You let me know, with you I can be real.
You make me feel like I'm a big deal.
When you see someone down you make them smile.
I know you would always walk the extra mile.
I'm not as good when I haven't seen you in a while.
You like to play cards, and games that are fast.
You always let me ramble on about my past.
You make me feel special, can this feeling last?

This is who we are, the people we are together.
This is who we are when we are with each other.
This is who we are, we should stay this way forever.
We walk side by side, close but not touching.
We share a whole conversation just by looking.
We talk about everything we think, about anything.
I'm so comfortable with you, I know I can really be me.
You understand me so well, you see what no one else sees.
We can make each other do anything by saying please.
I liked the way it was when we talked in the car.
I don't want to lose the connection we have so far.
I don't want this to change, I like the way we are.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
