Mermaid’s Song

Poem Commentary

This was given to me by the sand dollars and conch shells I found on Imperial Beach in 2004. It took over two years to get it to this point and seemed to be an eternal work in progress. Such fond memories of California and the creativity born in me there.

Mermaid’s Song

Songs of wisdom, strength and courage

 A mermaid sang from the westward sea;

“But I’m so weak and feeble,”

 I replied, so helpless, me.

“Come walk with me at break of day

Where Seagulls fly and Dolphins play

Stir up the seashells from the deep,

Evict surprises sands can’t keep.

Gather cracked ones tossed aside,

Accept what comes while you abide,

Bright crustaceans chipped from life

Want to shine, not once, but twice!

Such fire ablaze within my heart,

Faith, Hope, and Love she did impart,

Thus my story I shall tell,

Low tide brought forth needy shells.

Gather whole ones just for fashion,

Accent here and there to ration,

 Textured stripes and colored hues,

 Purple shades of different blues.

Angel Wings, Sand Dollars, more,

Add culture to my sculpture’s core.

Mused a while upon the deep,

I prayed the Lord, my soul to keep.

Sun had risen and I was shaken,

Was she a vision or a kitten?

At dawn I stood in fearless wonder,

As night had caused my mind to thunder!

Red barnacles add style galore

New “fancies” add to my décor,

I made a clown called Dancing Bear,

With wobbly eyes and sea weed hair!

As midnight hours turned into day

My crafts developed while I play,

Wind chimes and flutes from fresh bamboo,

Beads and seashells hung there too!

Somehow the next day troubles flew,

As new adventures I saw grew,

Life’s not whole nor is complete,

Until you find that broken piece.

I think by now you should be told

Why mermaids never do grow old,

Her gifts aren’t given for her to hold,

It’s giving that keeps her young and bold!

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
