My Best Friend, Gwen

Poem Commentary

I wrote this for my girlfriend from Jersey who is now a Texas transplant and gave it to her for Christmas. She is a very special gal!

My Best Friend, Gwen

I met a girl from Jersey with a doggie named Muldoon,

Who came to live in Texas on a whim one day in June,

She’s been a dear compadre, an amiga “mucho-fine,”

Bluebonnets and The Alamo; her journey to unwind.

We were both sorely smitten with a drug store named Wall-Green,

Best friends, we gaily chatted on the stair steps drinking tea.

But as much as we both tried, to get rid of mold and mice,

The Management changed hands, not once or twice, but thrice!

Gwenyth Aiken from New Jersey is quite brilliant, charming too,

We never had much money, but we always had Muldoon.

Her eclectic, hippie Karma was an aura in her home,

As “Doonie” jumped to greet us with a ball, and not a bone.

He is the best of Springers, for each tennis ball he’d see,

Would spring up in the air for a hundred,twenty-three.

I grant him “special status” as a Texan adoptee,

One friend in a million is my Gwenyth now to me!

She drove her dark blue Volvo all the way from the northeast,

To serve us Guacamole, salty Rita’s, wine and treats.

She turned me on to drama of a Doc whose name was “House,”

As we pondered further action on the mold and a small mouse.

What a nice poem to write about your friend. Friendships are special and real ones are a dime a dozen. I enjoyed reading this. Nice work.

LOL Marie. This dog is like a pre-schooler. He is so smart!

To have great poets there must be great audiences too.
