The Little Christmas Tree

The Little Christmas Tree

The little tree looked up and smiled,
'twas such a happy day.
Although the roots were severed
This little tree felt gay.
He understood what lay ahead,
He knew what was in store,
He knew before long he would die..
His life would be no more.
This didn't seem to woorry him
He stood up proud and straight,
Because he knew his future role
Was going to make him great.
For, first of all atop his head
A brilliant star was placed
And then a string of colored lights
Soon made his body graced.
A little bit of tinsel
Thrown gently here and there
Soon gave a gleam of elegance
To his dis-sheveled hair.
Then to add a magic touch,
A child bedecked the tree
With colored balls of radiance
For all the world to see.
The reason for the Glory--
This tree was to be given
In loving kindness of our Lord,
"The Christ Child" sent from heaven.
A little child has left his gift
For all the world to see,
To celebrate a birthday
With this little Christmas tree.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
