Take My Life

Take My Life

Take my life and mold it
Into what you would desire.
Remove the trash that's in my life
And burn it in your fire.
Take the rough, sharp edges
And sand them 'til they're smooth.
Cut out all the impurities
Of which, you disapprove.
Take my pride and trample it
And toss it all around.
Grind it into dust, Lord,
And throw it on the ground.
Take my need to be in charge
Away, and let me see
That when I let YOU take control'
It's easier for me.
Take away my selfishness
Let me learn to share
Whatever You desire, Lord
To show othersthat I care.
Remove from me the sinful things
That I might say or do.
Help me to be the person who
Would be a joy to you.
So take my life and mold it
So the whole world will see
That special kind of person
That you want me to be.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
