Poem Commentary

Another Southern Church we helped rebuild

From Torch to Triumph

And God said, “Let there be light”
And the light shone for miles around.
But, with the light that lit the sky,
Came a piercing,  grueling sound-
Sirens- screeching everywhere,
Were heard across the miles.
The New Year’s eve celebration
Brought tears instead of smiles.
What was seen was so devastating.
It caused our hearts to pound.
Our church, our house of worship,
Was burning to the ground.
Our pain was tearing deeper,
For adding to our strife
Was the horrible realization
That a young man lost his life.
We wonder why  this happened.
Why was this man killed?
Why was our church destroyed?
How can we rebuild?
But God has all the answers,
And he sent many teams
To help put up the framework,
The windows, altar and beams.
Strangers to one another,
Yet drawn to each by love.
Which seems to be the blueprint
Created in heaven above.
All were gathered in unity,
And we didn’t have to search.
Our loving God sent strangers
To help rebuild the church.
The unity and love we found
Is written in this story.
The Holy Spirit descended on us
In a blaze of triumph, a blaze of glory.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
