Top Of The World

(Read Commentary)

Top of the World

A gush of wind twists my hair out of my face, carrying the distant smell of popcorn and cotton candy from below. I open my eyes as I lean my head back against the thick medal bench in which I sit upon, somewhat comfortably. The color of the deepest seas, sprinkled with the smallest of glistening lights cover my eyes like a beautiful dream.

The star filled sky becomes larger as I am moved downward. The slow movement causes my seat to gently rock back and fourth as my view is partly blocked when the next seat takes its turn resting above me as I was once above it.

I look to my right and see the almost pale reflection of perfectly rounded moon dance on the surface of the water as a turtle ducks under and disappears beneath, Causing ripples on the once again still surface of the freshwater pond.

My last turn to experience the unexplainable feeling of being on top of the world comes as I look down below me and see all of the eager people scurry off to wait in a line that’s about to bring them on their next adventure.

The Farris Wheel slows to a stop as I hear screams escaping the mouths of the ones who experience the heart stopping, gut dropping feeling from riding the fierce rollercoaster’s and more. My view changes from seeing all the bright colorful lights flash and change, to what looks like a maze with a game at each turn, a food court against each high wall and rides leading you further into the thrill of being in the middle of it all.

I put my feet on the cement, at first it seems un-natural to be walking since for the last couple of minutes, which seemed like a lifetime I was floating high above a small world... or at least that’s what it felt like to me. I turn and around and look at the top seat and realize how high up I actually was, and I recognize the look on the couples face as they look around at their surroundings, discovering the real beauty of it all and noticing ordinary things in an extraordinary way…

Enjoying the feeling of being on top of the world.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
