Poem Commentary

The injustice of the native peoples

Do you hear our Native cry

Whe have become lost some of us
over our sacred land there's been much fuss.
once mighty warriors, filled with breath of spirit
now madeto blend in because of our strength you feared it.

Bringing so much concrete trash, technology woes
for the love of greed, you created monetary foes.
you've hushed our spiritual songs
only asceuating our cultural wrongs.

Tried to distinguish my people as a spanish decent
you should pay for the cultural trauma you never
tried to prevent.
we broke bread with you even after the intrusions
now alot of my people are homeless , drunk, and confused.

Raped the nature of it's blessings
ever since your arrival we've been stressing

Do you hear our Native cries,
our spirits asking why?

We are a soft spoken people, and peaceful
we never imagined how your deceit would lead
to ridicule.
Natives lived off the land, with respect to it's space
you ignore balance building all over the place.

My people fought in your frivilous wars, worked your slave jobs.
yet in your history we're depicted as filthy slobs.
demolishing our culture taken our women's innocense
when the spiritual picture should've taken presidence.

Pushed us further away from your society
onto uncharted, barren land known as reservations.
figured we wouldn't be able to maintain preservation.

The checks, free health care, and casino's was suppose to be fair
when this was our land, you claimed without any care.
created a crippling system, to make us lazy & dependent
knowing your just like that wicked , slithering serpent.

Do you hear our Native cries,
Our spirits still asking why.

You portray yourself as superior, because your really insecure. You've done nothing but try to taint people who are pure.
cultural shock to our native systems are still echoing
the savage way you tried stealing our pride .
many of my people are still trying to stablize from that horrific ride.

One minute you smile face to face, then you stab in the back the entire race.
trying to convince the youth to abort ancient culture
consuming our precious resources like volutures.

when will you right your wrongs
without repentence your spirit can't grow spiritually strong. Making mockery of our spiritual rituals, feathers, paintings & clay pots, like more spiritual than us , shooting gun powder shots.

A negative to have skin of bronze
unless your suntaning to achieve it, now who's won
This is the discription from the word , of the one who created, the Earth , moon , and the Sun.

My best friend lived on a reservation in South Dakota in her childhood. She is Lakote tribe. She tells me so many stories that are just heartbreaking. You really caught the essence of that with this piece. It is sad how greed and unjustified sense of superiority can lead a race of people to cause *so* much against fellow human beings. You are so amazing. I couldn't say a bad thing about your writing if I wanted to. :)

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.

T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
